Dr. Alex Sherman earned his bachelor’s degree from Columbia College and his medical degree from the NYU School of Medicine. He completed his medical training at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He went on to complete a fellowship in gastroenterology at NYU Langone Medical Center.
Dr. Sherman has published numerous journal articles and textbook chapters, focusing on his fields of expertise in gastroenterology and liver diseases. He is actively involved in the teaching of gastroenterology at the NYU Langone Medical Center, where he serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Sherman was instrumental in establishing and serving as the principal investigator for the Asian American Hepatitis B Program, a large-scale city-wide public health initiative. He is currently the Director of Clinical Trials at Vanguard Medical Group and has served as the principal investigator for numerous studies.
Dr. Sherman has broad expertise in the management of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, or GERD; he seeks to provide a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan and screen for the possibility of Barrett’s esophagus, a risk factor for esophageal cancer. Dr. Sherman recognizes the decline in quality of life for patients with irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, requiring individualized and multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment plans. Finally, Dr. Sherman recognizes the multifarious effects of obesity on one’s health and looks forward to innovative endoscopic management to prevent complications of diabetes, hypertension, and fatty liver disease.
Dr. Sherman provides gastroenterology and liver disease consultation and management and is proficient in various endoscopic procedures, including upper endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, colonoscopy, and ERCP. Dr. Sherman has been named to the New York Times Super Doctors® list and New York Magazine’s Top Doctors® list.
Dr. Sherman believes in the importance of appropriate screening colonoscopies to prevent colon cancer. He is excited about new treatments for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis that allow a return to a normal life free of symptoms. He is encouraged by new, simple treatments for hepatitis C that are tolerable and highly effective. He has been active in the community and public health approach to Hepatitis B in high risk groups and anticipates progress toward a “cure”.
